I am a Neil Gaiman fan, but this one fell short for me.
It was just "Meh...ok" for me.
The chapters were so episodic that they didn't seem to flow or connect. It was like a series of adventures strung together. It was an interesting concept, but ultimately it lacked luster.
Personally, I don't think it deserved the Newberry.
I think "Garden of Eve" was a much better tale addressing the subject of death.
